Sobekemsaf II
Pl. 100 · also Sekhemre Shedwaset Sobekemsaf
1568 BC to 1560 BC, about 8 years · Second Intermediate Period
Sobekemsaf II, also known as Sekhemre Shedwaset, governed the Theban region during the Second Intermediate Period. He reigned about 1568 to 1560 BC, with dates uncertain by about fifteen years. Succeeding Intef VII, he presided over Upper Egypt alongside his principal consort, Queen Nubkhaes, before the royal lineage passed to Senakhtenre Ahmose.
His reign of approximately eight years was longer than those of his immediate predecessors, yet few public monuments survive. Scholars know this king from contemporary objects and, notably, from the New Kingdom Abbott Papyrus, an official Ramesside document that inspected royal tombs and detailed the ancient plundering of Sobekemsaf II's pyramid at Dra Abu el-Naga. This mudbrick pyramid tomb confirmed his place in the established royal cemetery on the west bank of Thebes.
