Pl. 97 · also Sekhemre Wepmaat Intef, Antef V

1576 BC to 1573 BC, about 3 years · Second Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Intef V, whose throne name was Sekhemre Wepmaat, ruled Upper Egypt from Thebes during the Second Intermediate Period. He reigned about 1576 to 1573 BC, with dates uncertain by about fifteen years. He succeeded Rahotep and was the son of Sobekemsaf I, governing during a fragmented era when northern Egypt was dominated by the Hyksos. His brief reign of around three years was followed by the succession of his brother, Intef VI.

Modern scholars know of Intef V primarily through surviving archaeological finds from Upper Egypt. His burial place was a small mudbrick pyramid tomb at Dra Abu el-Naga on the west bank of Thebes. A significant historical document from his reign is the Coptos decree, an administrative text inscribed on stone at the temple of Min in Coptos, which ordered the removal of a local official accused of treason.
