Pl. 50 · also Ibi II

2173 BC to 2169 BC, about 4 years · First Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Qakare Ibi ruled Egypt from Memphis during the Eighth Dynasty in the First Intermediate Period. His reign is conventionally placed around 2173 BC to 2169 BC, with dates uncertain by about thirty years. He succeeded Merenhor and preceded Neferkauhor, governing for approximately four years during an era of diminishing central authority.

Despite the political decline of the period, Ibi managed to construct a modest pyramid at South Saqqara. This monument is culturally significant as the final known royal pyramid to incorporate carved Pyramid Texts, continuing an Old Kingdom funerary tradition despite its drastically reduced scale and simpler construction materials.

Scholars know of Qakare Ibi from his tomb and his presence on ancient records such as the Turin King List and the Abydos King List. His small pyramid complex stands as rare architectural evidence from a poorly documented chapter of Egyptian history.
