Neferkare II

Pl. 46

2180 BC to 2179 BC, about 1 years ยท First Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Neferkare II was a pharaoh of the Seventh and Eighth Dynasties during the First Intermediate Period. He held power for approximately one year, about 2180 to 2179 BC, though dates are uncertain by around thirty years. His base of authority was the ancient capital at Memphis, though his real influence over Upper Egypt was probably minimal.

Contemporary evidence for Neferkare II is virtually absent, reflecting the political instability and economic decline of the era. He left behind no known tomb or monumental buildings. Scholars trace his identity purely through retrospective royal records, notably the Abydos King List, which records his place between Menkare and his successor, Neferkare Neby.
