Neferkauhor

Pl. 51 · also Neferkauhor Khuwihapi

2169 BC to 2167 BC, about 2 years · First Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Neferkauhor reigned during the Eighth Dynasty, a transitional phase of the First Intermediate Period centred at Memphis. He succeeded Qakare Ibi and preceded Neferirkare II, holding the throne for roughly two years from around 2169 BC to 2167 BC, with dates uncertain by about thirty years.

While central control over southern Egypt had waned, Neferkauhor maintained diplomatic and administrative ties with regional elites. He is historically notable for issuing several royal decrees discovered at Coptos in Upper Egypt. These inscriptions conferred titles, protections, and appointments upon local officials, including the prominent governor Shemay and his family, illustrating how the Memphite crown relied on regional alliances.

Scholars know Neferkauhor primarily through these Coptos Decrees and the Abydos King List. No tomb or pyramid for this king has been located, and his physical remains are unknown.
