Amenemope
Pl. 140 · also Usermaatre Amenemope
1001 BC to 992 BC, about 9 years · Third Intermediate Period
Amenemope was the fourth pharaoh of the Twenty-first Dynasty. He reigned about 1001 to 992 BC, with dates uncertain by about five years. He was the son of Psusennes I and Queen Mutnedjmet, succeeding his father after a prolonged reign and governing from Tanis over a fragmented country. Upper Egypt during his tenure was administered by the High Priest of Amun Menkheperre.
Amenemope was originally provided with his own modest tomb, NRT IV, situated near his father's monument at Tanis. Later in the Twenty-first Dynasty, his mummy was transferred into a chamber within his father's tomb, NRT III, to safeguard it against robbers. His mummy survived along with wooden funerary coffins and a gilded mask. Scholars know this king from his intact Delta burials, contemporary administrative records, and surviving royal funerary equipment.
