Wegaf

Pl. 75 · also Khutawyre Wegaf, Ugaf

1794 BC to 1792 BC, about 2 years · Second Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Wegaf was a monarch of the early Thirteenth Dynasty, ruling during the initial phase of the Second Intermediate Period. He succeeded Amenemhat Sonbef and preceded Ameny Qemau, directing royal administration from the northern residence at Itjtawy. His rule lasted only about two years, from roughly 1794 to 1792 BC, with dates uncertain by about twenty-five years.

Due to the scarcity of contemporary records, very little is known about his parentage, family, or domestic policies. In earlier scholarship, Wegaf was sometimes mistakenly identified as the founder of the Thirteenth Dynasty because of a misreading of the Turin King List, but later studies restored him to a slightly later position in the sequence.

Scholars confirm his reign through a small number of surviving contemporary monuments, including a royal stela discovered at Abydos and a dedication statue found at the temple site of Medamud. His tomb has never been found.
