Sakir-Har

Pl. 89

1635 BC to 1620 BC, about 15 years ยท Second Intermediate Period

Modern phonetic rendering, not a copy of an inscription

Sakir-Har was an early ruler of the Fifteenth Dynasty during the Second Intermediate Period. He belonged to the line of Hyksos kings, who were of Levantine origin and governed Lower Egypt from the fortified delta city of Avaris. Conventional chronologies place his reign at about 1635 to 1620 BC, though the dates remain uncertain by around thirty years.

Very little is known about his life or governance. Egypt was divided politically at this time, with the Hyksos controlling the north while native rulers held power further south in Thebes. Sakir-Har is known primarily from archaeological excavation at Tell el-Dab'a, modern Avaris, where a limestone doorjamb preserving his name was discovered. This single inscribed block provided vital confirmation of his royal titles, which identify him directly as a Hyksos ruler, but his tomb has never been found.
