Merneith
Pl. 5 · also Merytneith
2940 BC to 2930 BC, about 10 years · Early Dynastic Period
Merneith held authority during the First Dynasty, ruling from approximately 2940 to 2930 BC, with dates uncertain by roughly fifty years. The daughter of King Djer and consort of King Djet, she acted as regent for her young son Den following Djet's death, wielding considerable executive power over the central administration at Memphis.
Her prominent position is evidenced by the scale of her funerary monuments, which match those of contemporary male rulers. She was buried at Abydos in Tomb Y within the royal necropolis of Umm el-Qa'ab, encircled by the graves of court retainers, and also held a large mud-brick mastaba, S3503, at Saqqara.
Scholars recognise her status from clay seal impressions at Abydos that list the dynastic rulers, where her name appears among the kings, as well as two large stone funerary stelae discovered at her Abydos tomb.
