Merenre Nemtyemsaf II
Pl. 43 · also Merenre II, Nemtyemsaf II, Menthesuphis
2184 BC to 2183 BC, about 1 years · Old Kingdom
Merenre Nemtyemsaf II was an Old Kingdom pharaoh of the Sixth Dynasty who ruled for approximately one year, around 2184 to 2183 BC. His dates are uncertain by about twenty-five years. He was the son of Pepi II and Queen Neith, inheriting the throne of Memphis at an advanced age following his father's remarkably prolonged reign.
Little is recorded concerning his brief rule, which unfolded during an era of diminishing central authority and rising provincial autonomy. No surviving pyramid or tomb has been identified for him, and no substantial monuments survive from his time. Scholars know of his existence primarily through ancient royal records, including the Abydos King List and the Turin King List. Following his death, he was succeeded by Netjerkare Siptah as the dynasty drew to its conclusion.
