Intef III
Pl. 61 · also Nakhtnebtepnefer Intef
2068 BC to 2060 BC, about 8 years · Middle Kingdom
Intef III was a king of the Eleventh Dynasty based at Thebes, reigning during the final stages of the First Intermediate Period conflicts. The son of Intef II and husband of Queen Iah, he maintained the extensive territory in Upper Egypt that his father had secured, keeping northern rivals at bay without major territorial shifts. He reigned about 2068 to 2060 BC, with dates uncertain by about 20 years.
His eight-year reign was a period of consolidation rather than conquest. By preserving the political and military dominance of Thebes, he left a stable foundation for his son and successor, Mentuhotep II, who would complete the reunification of Egypt. Intef III was interred at El-Tarif in the row tomb designated Saff el-Baqar.
Scholars know him through contemporary graffiti, temple relief fragments from Upper Egypt, and later genealogical inscriptions recorded by his royal descendants.
